Area Code for Atlanta
Atlanta uses five area codes: 404, 470, 678, 770, and 943. Covers neighborhood coverage, code history, hip-hop culture, scam patterns, and getting a business number.
Atlanta uses five active area codes: 404, 470, 678, 770, and 943. No single code claims the whole metro.
The 404 is the original — one of the 86 area codes AT&T assigned in 1947, covering all of Georgia before splits carved out the suburbs. It now serves the core intown neighborhoods and carries more cultural weight than any other three-digit number in the South.
770 split off in 1995 to handle Marietta, Cobb County, and the suburban ring outside I-285. 678 arrived in 1998 as an all-services overlay. 470 followed in 2010. 943 — the newest — activated in March 2022 as the fifth overlay when the existing pool ran thin.
For a business, understanding which code you pick matters beyond dialing logistics. In Atlanta, 404 signals you are inside the Perimeter.
What’s the area code for Atlanta?
Atlanta does not have one area code. Here is the complete picture:
| Code | Established | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 404 | 1947 | Central Atlanta, Fulton/DeKalb core, Clayton, Douglas | Original NANP code for all of Georgia; prestige enclave |
| 770 | 1995 | Marietta, Smyrna, Cobb Co., Gwinnett, Henry, Fayette, Cherokee | First split; suburbs outside I-285 (OTP) |
| 678 | 1998 | Overlay on 404 + 770 territory | All-services overlay; no geographic limit |
| 470 | 2010 | Overlay on 404/678/770 + north Georgia | Selected by Georgia PSC; extends beyond metro core |
| 943 | 2022 | Overlay matching 404/470/678/770 footprint | Newest code; activated March 15, 2022 |
All five codes require 10-digit dialing for local calls. There is no technical difference between calling a 404 number and calling a 678 number in Atlanta — the perception difference is cultural, not functional.
Atlanta area codes by neighborhood and suburb
Understanding which codes are associated with which parts of metro Atlanta helps businesses and newcomers choose strategically.
Downtown and Midtown (404)
The beating heart of Atlanta carries 404. CNN Center, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Centennial Olympic Park, and the tech corridor along West Peachtree Street are all 404. Midtown is home to Georgia Tech and the LGBTQ district anchored by Piedmont Park.
Buckhead (404)
Atlanta’s luxury and finance corridor. Buckhead’s retail strip, private equity firms, and law offices on Peachtree Road run on 404. It is Atlanta’s closest equivalent to Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Decatur (404)
The DeKalb County seat, just east of I-285. College town energy, independent restaurants, and a walkable downtown — all under 404 despite being a separate city from Atlanta.
Sandy Springs (404 / 678)
A Fortune 500 corporate corridor on Atlanta’s north side inside Fulton County. UPS world headquarters, Cox Enterprises, and Global Payments are all here. Sandy Springs was historically 404 but new lines may be assigned 678 or 470.
Marietta (770)
The Cobb County seat and the original suburb. Marietta is the anchor city of the 770 zone — when 404 split in 1995, Marietta and the entire suburban ring beyond I-285 became 770. The Marietta area code is a 770 by definition.
Alpharetta and Roswell (770 / 678)
The north Fulton tech corridor. Alpharetta has been nicknamed “Technology City of the South” for its density of tech companies. New lines here are frequently assigned 678 or 470.
Gwinnett County (770 / 678)
The fastest-growing county in Georgia. Duluth, Lawrenceville, Norcross, and Suwanee all fall inside the 770 boundary, with overlay 678 also active throughout.
History of Atlanta area codes
1947 — 404 covers all of Georgia
When AT&T and the Bell System launched the North American Numbering Plan, Georgia received a single code: 404. At the time it served Atlanta, Savannah, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, and every city in the state. NANPA assigned 86 original codes across the US and Canada; 404 was Georgia’s.
1954 — 912 splits off southern Georgia
Southern Georgia — Savannah, Brunswick, and the coastal region — was carved out as area code 912, the first reduction of 404’s territory.
1992 — 706 splits off western and northern Georgia
Population growth in Athens and the western half of the state prompted a second split. Area code 706 was assigned to west-central, northwest, and northeast Georgia, further shrinking 404 to the Atlanta metro.
1995 — 770 splits the suburbs
By the early 1990s, the Atlanta metro was growing fast enough that 404 number exhaustion was projected. In August 1995, area code 770 was created for the suburban ring outside Interstate 285 — the OTP (Outside the Perimeter) belt. Marietta, Smyrna, the whole of Cobb County, and the counties to the south and east became 770. Atlanta’s intown core kept 404.
1998 — 678 overlay begins
Rather than splitting geographies again, NANPA and the Georgia PSC introduced the first all-services overlay. On January 1, 1998, area code 678 was layered on top of both 404 and 770. Existing numbers kept their codes; new lines anywhere in the metro could be assigned 678. Ten-digit local dialing became mandatory.
2010 — 470 overlay added
A second overlay, area code 470, was added to the 404/678/770 complex. The Georgia Public Service Commission selected 470 as the relief code. It covers the same metro footprint and also extends into portions of north Georgia.
2022 — 943 is the newest Atlanta code
On March 15, 2022, area code 943 went into service as the fifth Atlanta-area code. The Georgia PSC approved it after projections showed the existing pool approaching exhaustion. 943 covers the same footprint as the other four codes.
404 in hip-hop and Atlanta culture
No area code in America carries more cultural freight per square mile than 404.
Atlanta is the rap capital of the 21st century. From the early 1990s through today, more chart-defining, genre-shaping hip-hop has come out of Atlanta than any other city — and 404 is the three-digit ID that the culture claims.
The founding generation: Goodie Mob and Outkast came up together in the early 1990s on Atlanta’s east side and Westside. Outkast’s ATLiens (1996) put the city’s code and identity in the title. André 3000 and Big Boi referenced their 404 origins throughout their catalog. Goodie Mob’s Cee-Lo and the rest of the Dungeon Family built the “Dirty South” aesthetic that ran on the 404.
The crunk and trap era: Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz defined crunk in the late 1990s. Ludacris’s “Welcome to Atlanta” (2002) is still the definitive Atlanta anthem. T.I. — Clifford Harris from Bankhead in Zone 3 — claimed the “King of the South” title as a pure 404 product. Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane built the trap sound out of Zone 6 East Atlanta.
The modern era: Future (Kirkwood, East Atlanta), Migos (Gwinnett County, which puts them in 770/678 — but Atlanta-identified), 21 Savage (Eastside 404), Lil Baby (Oakland City, Zone 3, 404), 2 Chainz, and 2 Pac Div have made Atlanta the reference point for every producer trying to understand where rap is going.
Atlanta’s sports teams carry the 404 identity into national broadcast: the Hawks, Falcons, Braves, Atlanta United FC, and Atlanta Dream all use 404 as their primary contact code.
April 4 — 404 Day — the date 4/4 is informally celebrated by Atlanta hip-hop culture as a nod to the area code. Artists, venues, and radio stations mark it.
Atlanta area code spam and scams
Atlanta’s five overlapping codes make it one of the most effective neighbor-spoofing zones in the country. A scammer can match any of 404, 470, 678, or 770 depending on the target’s exchange — and any of those will read as local.
Common Georgia scams to recognize:
- IRS and Social Security impersonation (404): A spoofed 404 call claims you owe back taxes and face immediate arrest. The FCC spoofing guide confirms government agencies do not call demanding immediate wire transfers or gift cards.
- Georgia Power / Atlanta Gas Light shutoff (404/770): Caller claims your utility service will be cut in 30 minutes unless you pay immediately via prepaid card. Georgia Power has published warnings; calls from its real number can be verified at georgipower.com.
- Storm and FEMA fraud (404/770/678): After tornado events (peak season March–May in Georgia), scammers pose as FEMA inspectors or contractors offering low-cost repairs. OTP suburbs in 770 — Cobb, Cherokee, Gwinnett — are frequently targeted after hail events.
- Fake delivery notifications (470/678): Spoofed UPS or Amazon calls using 470 or 678 numbers, claiming a package requires action before delivery.
The industry response is STIR/SHAKEN — a cryptographic call authentication framework mandated by the FCC under the TRACED Act. A-attestation (the highest level) means the originating carrier has verified the calling party is authorized to use that number.
DialPhone Atlanta numbers in 404, 470, 678, and 770 carry STIR/SHAKEN A-attestation. Outbound calls from your Atlanta business number display as verified to recipients rather than flagged as Spam Risk.

Famous companies in Atlanta area codes
Atlanta’s area codes are embedded in the identity of some of the world’s most recognized companies — and they cluster heavily in 404.
The Coca-Cola Company has been headquartered on North Avenue in Atlanta since 1892. The 404 number is as much a part of Coke’s identity as the red logo.
Delta Air Lines operates from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — the world’s busiest passenger airport since 1998 — and maintains its corporate headquarters in Hapeville. Primary contact lines are 404.
UPS (United Parcel Service) is headquartered in Sandy Springs on the north side of Atlanta. Despite being geographically in Fulton County, Sandy Springs numbers may be 404 or 678 depending on line vintage.
CNN — and parent company Warner Bros. Discovery — operates from One CNN Center in Downtown Atlanta. The CNN Center address is one of the most recognizable 404 numbers in broadcast media.
Cox Enterprises, one of the largest private companies in the US (media, automotive, communications), is headquartered in Sandy Springs and runs its corporate lines on 404 and 678.
Home Depot is headquartered in Vinings — a Cobb County community on the edge of the city — making it a 770 company by geography.
Chick-fil-A corporate operates from College Park near the airport: a 404/770 border address. NCR Voyix (formerly NCR Corporation), Genuine Parts Company, and Newell Brands are all Atlanta-headquartered companies in the 404 cluster.
Atlanta area code FAQ
Atlanta area code FAQ
What is the area code for Atlanta?
Atlanta does not have a single area code. The city and metro area use five overlapping codes: 404 (the original 1947 code covering central Atlanta), 770 (Marietta and suburbs since 1995), 678 (overlay added 1998), 470 (overlay added 2010), and 943 (newest overlay, activated March 2022).
404 is the most culturally significant — it covers Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, and Decatur. For a business number that signals an Atlanta core presence, 404 is the first choice.
What neighborhoods does the 404 area code cover?
404 covers the intown Atlanta neighborhoods within and immediately around the I-285 Perimeter: Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, Inman Park, Little Five Points, Old Fourth Ward, East Atlanta, Grant Park, Decatur, Sandy Springs, and parts of Dunwoody.
It serves portions of Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, Douglas, Cobb, and Gwinnett counties. All new numbers in these areas are just as likely to receive a 678 or 470 code — the 404 pool is shared with the overlays.
What is the 770 area code?
770 is the area code for the Atlanta suburbs outside the I-285 Perimeter — the OTP (Outside the Perimeter) belt. It covers Marietta, Smyrna, Kennesaw, Acworth, and the rest of Cobb County; Gwinnett County cities including Lawrenceville, Duluth, and Norcross; plus Henry, Fayette, Cherokee, and Rockdale counties.
770 was created in August 1995 when the original 404 code — which had served all of metro Atlanta since 1947 — was split to handle suburban growth. Home Depot's corporate headquarters in Vinings carries a 770 number.
What is the 678 area code?
678 is an all-services overlay code that was added on January 1, 1998 to cover the same geographic territory as both 404 and 770. Unlike a geographic split, an overlay does not require anyone to change their existing number — new phone lines in any Atlanta metro zip code may be assigned 678 regardless of whether that address would historically have been 404 or 770.
678 is fully equivalent to 404 and 770 for calls within the metro. Mandatory 10-digit local dialing applies across all five Atlanta codes.
What is the 470 area code?
470 is the third overlay for the Atlanta metro, selected by the Georgia Public Service Commission and added to the 404/678/770 complex. It covers the same territory as the existing Atlanta codes and also extends into parts of north Georgia beyond the metro core.
All five Atlanta-area codes — 404, 470, 678, 770, and 943 — require 10-digit dialing for all local calls. There is no geographic difference between them for purposes of calling within metro Atlanta.
Is 404 a hip-hop area code?
Yes — 404 is one of the most culturally significant area codes in American music. Atlanta is widely recognized as the rap capital of the 21st century, and 404 is its identifier.
Outkast, Goodie Mob, Ludacris, T.I., Lil Jon, Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Future, 21 Savage, Lil Baby, Migos, and 2 Chainz all came up in the 404/Atlanta ecosystem. April 4 (4/4) is unofficially celebrated as 404 Day in Atlanta hip-hop culture.
Are Atlanta area code calls scams?
Not automatically — but 404, 678, and 770 are heavily used for neighbor spoofing. Scammers match the first six digits of the target's own number to make calls appear local and increase answer rates.
Common Atlanta-specific scams include fake IRS or Social Security calls using spoofed 404 numbers, fake utility shutoff calls posing as Georgia Power or Atlanta Gas Light, storm and FEMA fraud during tornado season (March–May), and fake package delivery notifications spoofing UPS or Amazon. See the FCC spoofing guide at fcc.gov for how to verify unexpected calls.
How do I get an Atlanta phone number for my business?
You can get an Atlanta business number from a cloud VoIP provider without a physical Atlanta office. Choose your preferred code — 404 for an intown Atlanta identity, 770 for suburban presence, or 678/470 for general metro coverage — and the number is provisioned in minutes.
DialPhone Atlanta numbers include STIR/SHAKEN A-attestation, meaning your outbound calls display as verified rather than Spam Risk on recipient phones. Number porting from another carrier typically takes 2–5 business days for Georgia area codes.
What is the newest Atlanta area code?
943 is the newest Atlanta area code, activated on March 15, 2022. The Georgia Public Service Commission approved it as the fifth all-services overlay for the Atlanta metro complex when the existing 404/470/678/770 pool approached exhaustion.
943 covers the same geographic footprint as the other four Atlanta codes and requires the same 10-digit local dialing. New phone lines in Atlanta may be assigned any of the five codes depending on carrier inventory.
