Area Code for Boise
Boise and all of Idaho use area codes 208 (1947 original) and 986 (2016 overlay). Full history, Treasure Valley cities, scam alerts, and how to get a local number.
Boise and all of Idaho run on two area codes — 208 (one of the 86 original 1947 NANP codes) and 986 (statewide overlay, active since November 2016).
Idaho held the distinction of being a single-area-code state for nearly 70 years — longer than almost any other growing US state. That changed when the Idaho Public Utilities Commission approved 986 to prevent number exhaustion. This guide covers the full history, every Treasure Valley city, Idaho-specific scams, notable companies, and how to get a local number fast.
What’s the area code for Boise?
Boise is served by two area codes, both covering all of Idaho as a statewide overlay complex:
| Code | Established | Type | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 208 | 1947 | Original | All of Idaho | One of 86 original NANP codes; sole Idaho code for ~70 years |
| 986 | Nov 5, 2016 | Overlay | All of Idaho | Approved by Idaho PUC Nov 2, 2015; mandatory 10-digit dialing Aug 5, 2017 |
Both codes share the Mountain Time Zone (MT) — UTC−7 in winter, UTC−6 in summer. Exception: the northern Idaho panhandle (Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, Moscow) follows Pacific Time despite carrying 208/986 numbers.
A 208 number signals an established Idaho line — a business or long-term resident. A 986 number is a newer assignment from late 2016 onward. Both are equally local to anyone in Boise.
Boise metro area codes by city
All Treasure Valley cities share the 208/986 overlay. There is no geographic boundary between the two codes — either can appear anywhere in Idaho.
Boise city proper
Boise proper (pop. ~240,000) is the state capital and the Treasure Valley anchor. Downtown Boise, the North End, Bench, and East End neighborhoods all fall under 208/986. City, county, and state government offices all operate on 208 lines.
Meridian
Meridian (pop. ~130,000) is Idaho’s second-largest city and one of the fastest-growing in the US. Major employers include St. Luke’s Health System and a dense strip of national retailers along the Ten Mile corridor. All Meridian numbers are 208 or 986.
Nampa and Caldwell
Nampa and Caldwell anchor the western end of the Treasure Valley. Nampa (pop. ~115,000) hosts the College of Idaho and a large manufacturing base. Both cities use 208/986.
Eagle, Garden City, Star, and Kuna
Eagle and Star are among Idaho’s fastest-growing suburbs, attracting tech workers and remote professionals from the Pacific Northwest. Garden City sits between Boise and Eagle along the Boise River Greenbelt. Kuna lies south of Nampa. All use 208/986.
Mountain Home
Mountain Home (pop. ~15,000) lies 45 miles southeast of Boise and is home to Mountain Home Air Force Base — a key employer in the region. Area code: 208/986.
Statewide 208 and 986 cities
Beyond the Treasure Valley, the same codes cover Coeur d’Alene (north Idaho resort city), Pocatello and Idaho Falls (eastern Idaho), Twin Falls (Magic Valley), Lewiston (panhandle), Moscow (University of Idaho), and Sun Valley (world-class ski resort in the Sawtooth range). Idaho is geographically vast — 83,798 sq mi — but a single overlay complex serves it all.
History of Boise / Idaho area codes
Idaho’s area code history is a story of deliberate conservation and delayed growth — spanning nearly 80 years on a single code.
1947 — 208 is born. AT&T engineers design the North American Numbering Plan and assign area code 208 to the entire state of Idaho. It is one of the original 86 NPAs, covering every city from Boise to Coeur d’Alene to Idaho Falls from day one.
2001 — First exhaustion warning. NANPA projects that 208 will run out of assignable numbers by 2003. With 11 other single-code US states each at roughly 1 million population, Idaho’s growth toward 1.3 million is straining the supply.
2002 — Number pooling saves 208 (round one). The Idaho Public Utilities Commission implements number pooling in Boise, allowing multiple carriers to share number blocks rather than each holding a full 10,000-number block. The exhaustion date is pushed back significantly.
2007 — Pooling extended statewide. The Idaho PUC applies number pooling to the entire state, deferring a projected 2010 exhaustion. The strategy works — 208 survives into the 2010s as Idaho’s sole code.
2013 — Second exhaustion warning. Updated NANPA projections show 208 will exhaust by 2018. Conservation measures are now depleted. A second area code is unavoidable.
November 2, 2015 — Idaho PUC approves 986. After evaluating a geographic split (which would force some Idahoans to change numbers) versus a statewide overlay (everyone keeps their code), the Idaho PUC chooses the overlay. Area code 986 is approved for all of Idaho.
November 5, 2016 — 986 enters service. New numbers begin being assigned from 986. A permissive dialing period begins — callers can use 7-digit or 10-digit dialing for local calls.
August 5, 2017 — 10-digit dialing becomes mandatory. All Idaho local calls now require the full area code + 7-digit number. Idaho joins the rest of the modern NANP in requiring 10-digit local dialing.
The 70-year run as a single-code state is unusually long. It reflects both Idaho’s historically slower growth and the PUC’s effective number conservation strategy. Sources: NANPA, Idaho Public Utilities Commission, Wikipedia — Area codes 208 and 986.
208 as Idaho identity
Area code 208 carries cultural weight that goes well beyond a phone prefix.
The Capitol connection. The dome of the Idaho State Capitol in Boise stands exactly 208 feet tall — a coincidence that locals treat as poetic alignment. The shared number bridges the state’s founding infrastructure (the phone network) and its civic landmark.
Boise State’s blue turf. Boise State University unveiled the nation’s first non-green artificial football field on September 13, 1986, at what is now Albertsons Stadium. The university holds a federal trademark on the color blue as applied to artificial turf. BSU’s “Smurf Turf” is one of the most recognizable landmarks in college sports — and the university’s 208 area code is woven into helmet designs and merchandise celebrating the Treasure Valley. The blue turf is a genuine regional icon, drawing visitors even when football season is over.
Idaho potatoes. Idaho is the largest potato-producing state in the US, responsible for about one-third of all US potato output. The Idaho Potato Commission, headquartered in Eagle (208), has built “Famous Potatoes” into a nationally recognized brand. The J.R. Simplot Company — HQ in Boise — is the world’s largest privately held frozen potato processor, supplying McDonald’s since the 1960s.
Sun Valley and the Sawtooth Mountains. Sun Valley Resort (established 1936) is one of America’s oldest ski resorts, located in the Sawtooth Mountains under a 208 number. Celebrities and tech executives have maintained Idaho retreat properties in the Wood River Valley for decades. Sun Valley sits at the intersection of outdoor luxury and agricultural identity that defines the 208 market.
Micron Technology. Founded in Boise in 1978, Micron is the only major American manufacturer of computer memory chips (DRAM and NAND flash). It remains one of the largest private employers in Idaho and a cornerstone of the state’s emerging tech identity. Boise’s “Silicon Slopes” — a cluster of semiconductor, software, and data infrastructure firms — is anchored by Micron’s 208 presence.
Outdoor and tech crossover. Boise’s position between the Snake River Plain and the Boise Front mountains attracts outdoor-focused tech talent. The Boise tech scene — sometimes called “BOISe” by local boosters — has grown substantially as remote work normalized post-2020, adding new 208/986 mobile and VoIP lines at an accelerating pace.
Boise area code spam and scams
Boise-area codes are actively spoofed by scammers exploiting local caller ID trust. Idaho-specific patterns include:
Idaho Power impersonation. This is the most documented Idaho utility scam. Callers spoof Idaho Power’s 208 number, threatening immediate power shutoff unless payment is made by phone via prepaid card. Idaho Power has issued repeated public warnings: it never demands phone payment or instant settlement. If in doubt, call Idaho Power directly at the number on your bill. Source: Idaho Power Scam Alerts.
IRS and government impersonation. Callers posing as IRS agents or law enforcement use spoofed 208/986 numbers to claim tax debts or outstanding warrants. No legitimate federal agency collects fines or taxes by phone using prepaid cards or wire transfers.
Fake delivery notifications. Spoofed 208 numbers send texts or robocalls claiming a package is held and payment is needed. Legitimate carriers (UPS, FedEx, USPS) do not charge for delivery by phone.
Fake Boise State tuition scams. Students at BSU have been targeted with calls claiming tuition is overdue, using spoofed 208 numbers and threatening enrollment cancellation. Boise State communicates tuition matters through official portals, never unsolicited phone demands.
Scale of the problem. Spam calls in Idaho increased by over 310% year-over-year as of early 2026. Boise accounts for 22.24% of all unwanted calls within Idaho — the highest share of any Idaho city.
STIR/SHAKEN and what it means. The FCC mandates that carriers implement STIR/SHAKEN — a caller authentication framework. A-attestation means the carrier verified the caller owns the number. C-attestation (typical of spoofed calls) triggers “Spam Likely” on modern smartphones. See FCC guidance on spoofing and our STIR/SHAKEN glossary entry.
When you get a Boise number through DialPhone, outbound calls carry A-attestation — verified, not flagged.
How to get a Boise business phone number
Getting a Boise 208 or 986 number for your business takes under 10 minutes through a cloud VoIP provider. No Idaho office required.
Step 1: Choose your area code. Both 208 and 986 are equally recognized as Boise/Idaho numbers. If 208 specifically matters to your brand, check inventory — older assignments are more limited.
Step 2: Sign up with DialPhone. Search available Idaho numbers by area code during signup. Filter by 208 or 986 based on availability and preference.
Step 3: Assign the number to your team. Route the Boise number to mobile, desktop app, or a shared team queue. Add a voicemail greeting, call menu, or AI receptionist as needed.
Step 4: Set outbound caller ID. Configure your 208 or 986 number as the outbound caller ID so calls you make show the local number — not an 800 number or personal cell.
Step 5: Port existing numbers if needed. Already have an Idaho number with another carrier? Bring it to DialPhone through number porting. US local number ports typically complete in 2–5 business days.

Famous companies in Idaho area codes
Idaho’s 208/986 overlay maps to a diverse cluster of Fortune 500 and privately held industry leaders — spanning semiconductors, food processing, retail, and utilities.
Micron Technology — Founded in Boise in 1978, Micron is the sole remaining major US manufacturer of DRAM and NAND flash memory. Its Boise campus (208) employs thousands of engineers and remains the company’s global headquarters. Micron is a linchpin of US semiconductor independence.
J.R. Simplot Company — Headquartered at the JUMP campus in downtown Boise, Simplot is the world’s largest privately held frozen potato processor. The company has supplied McDonald’s french fries since the 1960s and remains one of Idaho’s largest private employers (208).
Albertsons Companies — Founded in Boise in 1939 by Joe Albertson; now headquartered in Boise (208). The second-largest US supermarket chain after Kroger, operating 2,200+ stores nationally under the Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, and Jewel-Osco banners.
Boise Cascade — HQ Boise (208). A Fortune 500 forest products and building materials company; publicly traded (NYSE: BCC). One of the largest US manufacturers of engineered wood products.
Idaho Power — HQ Boise (208). The primary electric utility serving southern Idaho and eastern Oregon, operating 17 hydroelectric dams on the Snake River system.
Lamb Weston — HQ Eagle, ID (208). One of the world’s largest producers of frozen potato products; spun off from ConAgra Foods in 2016. NYSE: LW.
Clearwater Paper — Manufacturing operations in Lewiston, ID (208). A major producer of private-label tissue and paperboard products for US retailers.
Idaho’s industry mix — semiconductors, agriculture-tech, retail, and utilities — means a 208 or 986 number signals credibility across a genuinely diverse B2B economy.
Boise area code FAQ
Boise area code FAQ
What is the area code for Boise?
Boise uses area code 208, one of the 86 original North American area codes assigned in 1947. Area code 208 covers all of Idaho — not just Boise — and is the state's flagship code.
In 2016, area code 986 was added as a statewide overlay, covering the same geographic territory as 208. Both codes serve Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls, and every other Idaho city. Ten-digit dialing became mandatory statewide on August 5, 2017.
What is the 986 area code?
Area code 986 is Idaho's second area code, activated on November 5, 2016, as a statewide overlay to 208. The Idaho Public Utilities Commission approved it on November 2, 2015, after NANPA projected that 208 would exhaust its number supply by 2018.
The 986 overlay covers the same territory as 208 — the entire state of Idaho. Existing customers kept their 208 numbers. New lines assigned after November 2016 may carry 986. A permissive dialing period ran from November 5, 2016 to August 4, 2017, after which 10-digit dialing became mandatory.
Does Boise have more than one area code?
Yes. Boise is served by both 208 and 986. Both are statewide overlays — neither is specific to Boise only, and neither signals a particular neighborhood or district within the city.
A 208 number is typically an older assignment; 986 numbers are newer (post-November 2016). Both are equally local. A business in downtown Boise, Meridian, or Nampa can hold either code.
What cities are in the 208 area code?
Area code 208 covers every city in Idaho. In the Treasure Valley metro: Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Garden City, Eagle, Star, Kuna, and Mountain Home.
Statewide, 208 also covers Coeur d'Alene, Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Lewiston, Moscow, Sun Valley, and Sandpoint. Area code 986 covers the same full-state territory as an overlay.
Is 208 a scam area code?
No — 208 is a legitimate Idaho area code, not a scam code. However, scammers do spoof 208 and 986 numbers to make calls appear local and trustworthy.
Common Idaho-specific scams include Idaho Power impersonation calls demanding immediate payment and fake IRS or delivery notifications. Idaho Power has confirmed it never demands phone payment. STIR/SHAKEN call authentication helps identify spoofed calls: spoofed scam calls receive C-attestation and appear as 'Spam Likely' on modern phones.
What time zone is Boise (208 area code)?
Boise and most of Idaho are in the Mountain Time Zone (MT) — UTC−7 in winter (MST), UTC−6 in summer (MDT). Idaho observes daylight saving time.
One notable exception: the northern Idaho panhandle (Lewiston, Moscow, Coeur d'Alene) is in the Pacific Time Zone despite carrying a 208 or 986 area code — they follow Washington state time, not Boise time. When calling panhandle numbers from Boise, there is a 1-hour difference.
Can I get a Boise 208 number without a Boise office?
Yes. Virtual (VoIP) phone numbers are not tied to a physical address. Any business, anywhere in the US, can get a Boise 208 or 986 number through a cloud phone provider and route calls to any device.
DialPhone assigns available Idaho numbers in minutes. No Boise office, no hardware, and no long-term contract required. Outbound calls display your 208 or 986 number as caller ID. Existing numbers can be ported from another carrier — US local ports typically complete in 2–5 business days.
Why did Idaho need a second area code?
Idaho's population grew from about 1 million to nearly 2 million between 1990 and 2020, driving faster-than-expected demand for new phone numbers. NANPA first projected 208 exhaustion in 2001 (by 2003). Number pooling in Boise (2002) and statewide (2007) delayed the timeline.
By 2013, updated projections showed 208 would exhaust by 2018. The Idaho PUC chose a statewide overlay — adding 986 — over a geographic split, so existing customers kept their familiar 208 numbers.
