Area Code for Dallas

Dallas uses four area codes: 214 (1947), 972 (1996), 469 (1999), and 945 (2021). Fort Worth uses 817/682. Full guide to DFW codes, history, and business numbers.

By Darshan M · Published May 27, 2026

Dallas runs on four area codes — 214, 469, 972, and 945 — all serving the same metro territory as a single overlay complex.

Fort Worth and the western DFW Metroplex operate separately under 817 and 682. Understanding which code covers which part of the region matters whether you’re verifying a local number, choosing a business line, or tracing the DFW corporate landscape.

What’s the area code for Dallas?

Dallas, Texas and the eastern Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex are served by four area codes under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP):

CodeEstablishedCoverageNotes
214January 1, 19479-county Dallas NPA (full overlay)Original NANP code; Dallas’s corporate identity number
972September 14, 1996Same as 214 (full overlay since 1999)Created as suburb split; converted to overlay July 1999
469July 1, 1999Same as 214 and 972 (full overlay)First true metro overlay; triggered 10-digit dialing
945January 15, 2021Same as 214, 469, and 972 (full overlay)Approved by PUCT February 27, 2020; newest Dallas code

All four codes serve the same nine counties: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Navarro, Rockwall, and eastern Tarrant.

Ten-digit dialing is required for all local calls — even within the same area code. Dallas is in the Central Time Zone (UTC−6 winter, UTC−5 during DST).

DFW metro area codes by region

The overlay system means 214, 469, 972, and 945 all appear across Dallas County and its suburbs. Geography still shapes perception even if not enforcement.

Downtown Dallas and inner city (214/469)

The urban core carries the heaviest concentration of 214 numbers — legacy assignments from the original code that corporations have held for decades.

  • Downtown / CBD — AT&T HQ, Comerica Bank Tower, financial district
  • Uptown — residential high-rises, professional services firms
  • Deep Ellum — entertainment, creative industries, tech startups
  • Lakewood / Lake Highlands — established residential east Dallas

For a new business number, both 214 and 469 are available in this territory.

Northern suburbs (972 historically; all overlays apply)

When 972 split from 214 in 1996, the northern suburbs were its primary territory — and that perception persists.

  • Plano — Toyota Motor North America HQ, JCPenney (former HQ), major insurance and financial services
  • Frisco — fastest-growing suburb in the US by population at various points in the 2010s
  • Richardson and Garland — Telecom Corridor (UTD campus + legacy carrier infrastructure)
  • McKinney and Allen — outer suburban ring; strong residential growth

Fort Worth and Tarrant County (817/682)

Fort Worth is a distinct city with its own area code identity. The 817 and 682 codes serve all of Tarrant County and the western Metroplex.

  • Fort Worth downtown — American Airlines HQ, financial district, cultural district
  • Arlington — AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys), Six Flags, University of Texas at Arlington
  • Denton — University of North Texas; shared 940 territory (separate NPA)
  • Mansfield, Euless, Bedford, Hurst — Mid-Cities between Dallas and Fort Worth

Note: the Dallas Cowboys play in Arlington — 817 territory — not in Dallas proper.

History of Dallas area codes

Dallas’s area code timeline mirrors the transformation of North Texas from agricultural state capital to one of America’s largest metro economies.

January 1, 1947 — 214 is born. AT&T’s NANP assigned 214 to cover all of northeast Texas — from just west of Dallas through Waco, east to the Arkansas and Louisiana borders. A single code covered an enormous territory.

January 1, 1953 — 817 splits off Fort Worth. Tarrant County was carved out of 214 and merged with eastern 915 territory to create area code 817. Fort Worth and the western Metroplex have operated on a separate code ever since.

1990 — 903 splits off East Texas. The eastern Texas territory — Tyler, Longview, Texarkana — was separated as area code 903, reducing 214 to the core Dallas-area counties.

September 14, 1996 — 972 created. Rapid population growth and fax/pager proliferation exhausted Dallas numbers faster than planners expected. Area code 972 was created as a geographic split — the suburbs (Plano, Irving, Garland) moved to 972 while Dallas proper stayed 214.

July 1, 1999 — 469 launches; boundary erased. Within three years, both 214 and 972 were filling again. The PUCT ordered a full overlay: area code 469 launched, the 214/972 geographic boundary was erased, and ten-digit dialing became mandatory for all Dallas metro calls.

October 7, 2000 — 682 overlays Fort Worth’s 817. The western Metroplex followed the same pattern — 682 was added as a full overlay for 817.

January 15, 2021 — 945 activates. NANPA filed a petition with the PUCT in October 2018 forecasting 214/469/972 exhaustion. The PUCT approved 945 on February 27, 2020 (NANPA Planning Letter 537, April 8, 2020). Central office assignments became available January 15, 2021. Current projections suggest a fifth Dallas code will not be needed until approximately 2032.

214 as Dallas business identity

No DFW area code carries more corporate weight than 214.

AT&T — global HQ in downtown Dallas; 214 numbers. Ranked #35 on the Forbes Global 2000. The company’s Dallas presence predates the NANP itself.

Texas Instruments — semiconductor giant founded in Dallas in 1951; global HQ in Dallas; 214. TI’s contributions to the integrated circuit helped shape modern computing.

Southwest Airlines — founded in Dallas in 1967; global HQ at Dallas Love Field; 214. One of the US’s largest domestic carriers.

Comerica Bank — moved its HQ from Detroit to Dallas in 2007; 214 territory.

Tenet Healthcare — Fortune 500 hospital network; HQ in Dallas; 214.

Toyota Motor North America — relocated its US headquarters from Torrance, California to Plano in 2017; 972 territory.

ExxonMobil — global HQ in Irving; 972. The world’s largest publicly traded oil and gas company by market cap.

7-Eleven — global HQ in Irving; 972. The convenience chain pioneered the 24-hour retail model.

American Airlines — global HQ in Fort Worth; 817. The world’s largest airline by fleet size.

The 214/972/469/945 overlay is one of the densest corporate HQ concentrations in the United States — over 24 Fortune-caliber headquarters operate within the Dallas NPA nine-county footprint.

Dallas area code spam and scams

The 214, 469, and 972 area codes are among the most spoofed in Texas. Scammers fake a Dallas local caller ID to exploit the probability that recipients answer numbers they recognize as local.

Documented Dallas-area scam patterns:

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed calls from individuals impersonating department lieutenants, spoofing 972 numbers, and demanding payment for fake arrest warrants — directing victims to grocery stores to load prepaid debit cards.

Law enforcement impersonation escalates in another variant: callers posing as DEA agents or “Dallas Narcotics” officers claim the victim is part of a major investigation. They demand cash, Bitcoin, or gift card payments and instruct victims not to call anyone because “their phone is monitored.”

Social Security fraud is widespread with 214 spoofing — fake threats of account suspension or legal action. Texas Comptroller impersonation calls also occur, citing fictitious back-tax debts.

STIR/SHAKEN call authentication. The FCC-mandated STIR/SHAKEN framework requires carriers to authenticate outbound calls and assign an attestation level: A (fully verified), B (partial), or C (gateway/unverified). Spoofed scam calls receive C-attestation or none, triggering “Spam Likely” labels on iPhones and Android devices.

When you get a Dallas number through DialPhone, outbound calls carry A-attestation — verified at the highest level so your calls reach contacts as legitimate, not screened.

How to get a Dallas business phone number

Getting a 214, 469, 972, or 945 number for your business takes under 10 minutes through a cloud VoIP provider. No Texas office required.

Step 1: Choose your code. For maximum Dallas brand recognition, 214 is the prestige choice — inventory is limited, so check availability early. 469 is neutral and metro-wide. 972 suits businesses targeting the suburban market.

Step 2: Sign up with DialPhone. Search available Dallas numbers by area code during signup. All four Dallas codes (plus 817 for Fort Worth) are available.

Step 3: Assign to users or a team. Route your Dallas number to mobile, desktop app, or a team queue. Add a voicemail greeting, call routing menu, or AI receptionist.

Step 4: Set outbound caller ID. Display your Dallas number on outbound calls — not an 800 number or personal cell.

Step 5: Port existing numbers if needed. Bring an existing Dallas number to DialPhone via number porting. US local numbers typically complete in 2–5 business days.

Dallas area code FAQ

Dallas area code FAQ

What is the area code for Dallas, Texas?

Dallas uses four area codes operating as a single overlay complex: 214, 469, 972, and 945. All four serve the same geographic territory — there is no neighborhood boundary between them.

214 is the original 1947 code and Dallas's cultural identity number. 972 was introduced in 1996 as a suburban split, then converted to a full overlay in 1999. 469 launched in 1999 as the first true overlay. 945 became available on January 15, 2021, as the fourth code. Ten-digit dialing is required for all local calls.

Is 214 or 972 the main Dallas area code?

Both are legitimate Dallas codes, but they carry different identities. 214 is the prestige code — it's Dallas's original 1947 number, used by AT&T, Texas Instruments, Southwest Airlines, and most downtown corporations. 972 was originally assigned to the suburbs (Plano, Irving, Garland) when it split from 214 in 1996.

After the 1999 conversion to a full overlay, both codes cover all of Dallas County. However, the perception remains: 214 signals downtown Dallas, while 972 carries a suburban or outer-metro association. For business credibility in Dallas proper, a 214 number is the preferred choice.

What is the 972 area code for?

Area code 972 covers the Dallas metro including suburbs like Plano, Irving, Garland, Mesquite, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, and Richardson. It was created on September 14, 1996, as a geographic split from 214 to handle rapid number exhaustion in the suburbs.

In 1999, the 214/972 boundary was erased and 972 became a full overlay — new numbers in any part of the metro could be assigned 972 regardless of location. Major companies with 972 numbers include ExxonMobil (Irving), Toyota Motor North America (Plano), 7-Eleven (Irving), and JCPenney (Plano).

What is the 469 area code?

Area code 469 is a full overlay introduced on July 1, 1999, covering the same territory as 214 and 972. It was introduced alongside the erasure of the 214/972 geographic boundary, requiring ten-digit dialing for all local calls in the Dallas metro.

469 is a neutral code — it carries no neighborhood or suburb stigma because it was designed as a metro-wide overlay from day one. It covers all nine counties in the Dallas NPA: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Navarro, Rockwall, and eastern Tarrant.

What is the 945 area code?

Area code 945 is the newest Dallas overlay. NANPA petitioned the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) in October 2018 citing rapid number exhaustion driven by population growth, mobile devices, and VoIP. The PUCT approved 945 on February 27, 2020, and central office code assignments became available on January 15, 2021.

Like 469 and 972, 945 covers the entire Dallas NPA — all four codes serve identical geography. NANPA projections as of 2023 suggest a fifth Dallas area code will not be needed until approximately 2032.

What area code is Fort Worth, Texas?

Fort Worth uses area codes 817 and 682. Area code 817 was created in 1953 when Tarrant County split from the original 214 territory. A three-way territory reduction in 1997 reduced 817's footprint, and the 682 overlay was introduced on October 7, 2000, to handle continued growth.

817 and 682 serve Fort Worth, Arlington, Denton (shared coverage), and most of the western DFW Metroplex. Note: AT&T Stadium — home of the Dallas Cowboys — is in Arlington, which uses 817, not the Dallas 214/469/972/945 codes.

Can I get a Dallas 214 number without a Dallas office?

Yes. Virtual VoIP numbers are not tied to a physical location. Any business anywhere in the US — or internationally — can get a 214, 469, 972, or 945 number through a cloud phone provider and route calls to any device.

DialPhone assigns available Dallas numbers in minutes. No Texas office, no hardware, no long-term contract. Outbound calls display your Dallas caller ID, and calls are delivered with STIR/SHAKEN A-attestation — the highest trust level — so they reach customers as verified rather than flagged as 'Spam Likely.'

Are 214 or 972 calls spam?

214 and 972 are legitimate Dallas area codes, but scammers frequently spoof them to exploit local trust. The Dallas County Sheriff's Department has documented impersonation calls from spoofed 972 numbers demanding payment for fake arrest warrants.

Common Texas-specific patterns include fake law enforcement warrant calls, DEA impersonation demanding cash or Bitcoin, Social Security number fraud threats, and fake utility shutoff calls impersonating Oncor Electric Delivery. Real utilities and law enforcement never demand immediate gift-card or crypto payments by phone. STIR/SHAKEN authentication flags spoofed calls as 'Spam Likely' on iOS and Android.
