Area Code for Detroit

Detroit has area codes 313 (since 1947) plus 679 overlay (2025). Metro suburbs use 248, 586, 734. History, neighborhoods, and how to get a local number.

By Darshan M · Published May 27, 2026

Detroit runs on two area codes: 313, the original 1947 code that helped define the Motor City’s identity, and 679, a brand-new overlay that entered service November 7, 2025.

Whether you’re decoding a Detroit number on your screen, choosing a local number for your business, or tracing the region’s telecom history, this guide covers every Detroit-area area code with exact coverage, full timeline, and the cultural context that makes 313 unlike any other code in America.

What’s the area code for Detroit?

Detroit proper and its closest Wayne County suburbs are served by two codes under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP):

CodeEstablishedCoverageNotes
3131947Detroit city, Dearborn, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Grosse Pointes, Downriver citiesOriginal NANP code; fully exhausted 2027
679Nov 2025Overlay of 313 geography (same Wayne County core)MPSC-ordered overlay; 10-digit dialing required

Both codes share Eastern Time (ET) — UTC−5 in winter, UTC−4 in summer.

A quick rule of thumb: a 313 number means an established Detroit or inner-suburb contact. A 679 number means a newer activation — same geography, just assigned after November 2025.

Detroit metro area codes by region

The Detroit metropolitan area spans four counties and five area codes. Each county has its own code.

313 and 679 — Detroit city and inner Wayne County

Area codes 313 and 679 cover Detroit’s city limits and the municipalities immediately surrounding it.

Detroit neighborhoods served by 313/679:

  • Downtown and Midtown — Renaissance Center, Campus Martius, Wayne State University corridor
  • Corktown — Detroit’s oldest neighborhood; Michigan Central Station redevelopment
  • New Center — Henry Ford Health campus, Fisher Building
  • Eastern Market — historic wholesale market district
  • Hamtramck — independent city fully surrounded by Detroit; 313 enclave
  • Highland Park — independent city surrounded by Detroit; 313 enclave

Inner Wayne County suburbs (313/679):

  • Dearborn and Dearborn Heights (Ford Motor headquarters city)
  • Inkster, Redford Township
  • Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Shores
  • Downriver: Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Taylor, Ecorse, River Rouge, Melvindale, Wyandotte area

248 and 947 — Oakland County suburbs

Area code 248, established in 1997, covers Oakland County — Detroit’s northern and northwestern suburb ring. Its overlay is 947.

Key 248 cities: Troy, Southfield, Farmington Hills, Royal Oak, Pontiac, Novi, Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester Hills, West Bloomfield, Waterford, Birmingham, Berkley, Ferndale, Madison Heights, Clarkston, Milford.

Oakland County is Michigan’s most affluent county. A 248 number signals a North Oakland suburb address — home to major auto supplier headquarters and corporate campuses.

586 — Macomb County

Area code 586, established in 2001 as a split from 810, covers all of Macomb County — Detroit’s northeastern suburb ring. No overlay code exists yet.

Key 586 cities: Warren, Sterling Heights, Mount Clemens (county seat), St. Clair Shores, Roseville, Eastpointe, Clinton Township, Shelby Township, Utica, Chesterfield, New Baltimore, Romeo.

Warren is Michigan’s third-largest city and a major auto-industry manufacturing hub — 586 is the code for Detroit’s industrial base.

734 — Outer Wayne County and Ann Arbor

Area code 734 split from 313 in December 1997. It covers western and southern Wayne County plus Washtenaw County (Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti) and Monroe County.

Key 734 cities: Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Livonia, Westland, Garden City, Wayne, Romulus, Trenton, Wyandotte (outer), Southgate, Monroe.

Ann Arbor (University of Michigan) and the outer Wayne County manufacturing belt both use 734. Despite geographic overlap with the Detroit metro, 734 is a distinct code with its own regional identity.

History of Detroit area codes

Detroit’s area code story spans nearly 80 years and mirrors the region’s industrial growth and population shifts.

1947 — 313 established. AT&T engineers assigned area code 313 to southeastern Michigan under the original North American Numbering Plan. Detroit received 313 as the fourth most prominent metro code, behind New York (212), Los Angeles (213), and Chicago (312). The original 313 covered all of lower Michigan southeast — Detroit, Flint, Ann Arbor, Monroe, and The Thumb.

1947 — 906 assigned. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula received 906 simultaneously, the only other original Michigan code.

Later splits creating regional codes. As population and phone demand grew, 517 was assigned to central Michigan and 616 to western Michigan in subsequent years.

December 1, 1993 — 810 splits from 313. The northern and western portions of the original 313 territory (Flint, Port Huron, and the Thumb region) split into area code 810. Permissive dialing ran until August 10, 1994. This was the first major reduction of 313’s footprint. Macomb County also moved to 810 at this time.

December 13, 1997 — 734 splits from 313. Outer Wayne County, Ann Arbor, and Monroe County separated into 734. The same year, Oakland County suburbs split from 810 into 248.

2001 — 586 splits from 810. Macomb County separated from 810 into its own code, 586.

February 2000 — 679 reserved, then suspended. NANPA reserved 679 as a potential 313 overlay, but suspended implementation in April 2000 when number demand projections were revised downward.

March 17, 2025 — MPSC approves 679 overlay. All prefixes in the 313 numbering plan were assigned. The Michigan Public Service Commission ordered the 679 overlay, citing smartphone proliferation and connected-device demand.

November 7, 2025 — 679 enters service. New Detroit-area numbers now receive 679. Mandatory 10-digit dialing became effective October 7, 2025. NANPA projects 313 numbers fully exhausted by Q4 2027. Area code 679 is expected to provide relief through approximately 2071.

313 as Detroit’s identity

No American area code carries more concentrated cultural weight per digit than 313.

The numbers behind the pride. Detroit was assigned 313 in October 1947 as one of the original 86 NANP codes — and the fourth most prominent metro code in the nation. That founding seniority gives 313 a prestige parallel to New York’s 212 or Chicago’s 312. Scarcity reinforces status: 313 prefixes are now exhausted, making existing 313 numbers increasingly coveted.

Eminem and 8 Mile. Eminem’s 1996 debut album Infinite includes a track simply titled “313.” In the 2002 film 8 Mile, the area code runs through the narrative — his character’s crew calls themselves “three one third.” For anyone who grew up in Detroit’s hip-hop scene, 313 is shorthand for the city itself.

Techno music’s birthplace. Detroit techno — invented in the early 1980s by Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson in neighborhoods now served by 313 — became a global genre. The annual Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit draws international acts to Hart Plaza, all within the 313 footprint.

Motown legacy. Motown Records was founded on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit in 1959. Though the label relocated to Los Angeles in 1972, its founding address — and the cultural infrastructure it built — belongs to 313.

313 Day. Detroit celebrates 313 Day each year on March 13 (3/13). The date draws arts events, music, and community gatherings across the city — the area code as annual holiday.

Sports. Detroit’s four major professional sports franchises all call the 313 home: the Tigers (MLB, Comerica Park), the Lions (NFL, Ford Field), the Red Wings (NHL, Little Caesars Arena), and the Pistons (NBA, Little Caesars Arena).

Automotive heritage. Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn headquarters, General Motors’ Renaissance Center tower, and Detroit’s industrial manufacturing core all sit in the 313/679 zone. The “Big Three” auto capital and the 313 area code are inseparable in the American business geography.

Detroit area code spam and scams

Detroit area codes — especially the iconic 313 — are frequently spoofed by scammers who exploit local caller ID to increase answer rates.

DTE Energy utility shutoff fraud. Michigan’s most common phone scam involves callers impersonating DTE Energy (Detroit’s primary electric and gas utility). The caller threatens immediate power disconnection and demands payment via gift cards, Zelle, Bitcoin, or Green Dot prepaid cards. DTE Energy never demands phone payment — all shutoff notices are sent by USPS mail. If threatened, call DTE’s Corporate Security line directly: 313-235-9113.

IRS impersonation. Callers spoofing 313 numbers claim to be IRS agents threatening arrest for unpaid taxes. The IRS never initiates contact by phone — all IRS communication begins by mail. See the IRS guidance on tax scams.

DWSD water shutoff fraud. Callers impersonate the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, threatening service shutoff and demanding immediate phone payment. DWSD never requests payment via phone.

Auto recall and warranty fraud. Michigan residents receive high volumes of fake extended warranty calls and auto recall notices — particularly targeted at the automotive-industry-heavy 313 and 248 regions.

STIR/SHAKEN protection. The FCC-mandated STIR/SHAKEN framework requires carriers to authenticate outbound calls and assign attestation levels: A (fully verified), B (partial), or C (unverified/gateway). Spoofed scam calls typically receive C-attestation, triggering “Spam Likely” labels on modern phones.

When you get a Detroit business number through DialPhone, outbound calls carry A-attestation — the highest trust level — so your legitimate business calls reach customers as verified rather than flagged.

How to get a Detroit business phone number

Getting a Detroit 313 or 679 number for your business takes under ten minutes through a cloud VoIP provider. No Detroit office required.

Step 1: Choose your code. Decide between 313 (established Detroit identity, limited availability) or 679 (new overlay, same geography, more inventory). For Oakland County presence, consider 248. For Macomb County, 586.

Step 2: Sign up with DialPhone. Search available Detroit numbers by area code during signup at DialPhone. Available numbers display in real time.

Step 3: Route to your team. Assign the number to your mobile app, desktop softphone, or a team call queue. Add an AI receptionist, voicemail greeting, or auto-attendant as needed.

Step 4: Set outbound caller ID. Configure your Detroit number as the outbound caller ID so calls you make display the local Detroit number — not a toll-free line or personal cell.

Step 5: Port existing numbers if needed. If you already have a Detroit number with another carrier, bring it to DialPhone through number porting. US local number ports typically complete in 2–5 business days.

Michigan’s industry mix — dominated by automotive, financial services, and manufacturing — means a Detroit area code signals deep B2B credibility. A 313 number for a professional services firm carries immediate Motor City authority.

Detroit area code FAQ

Detroit area code FAQ

What is the area code for Detroit?

Detroit uses two area codes. Area code 313 has served Detroit since 1947 — it is one of the original North American Numbering Plan codes and covers Detroit proper plus close-in Wayne County suburbs including Dearborn, Hamtramck, the Grosse Pointes, and Downriver communities.

Area code 679 launched November 7, 2025 as an overlay for the same geography. All 313 customers kept their existing numbers. New numbers assigned in Detroit now receive 679. Both codes require 10-digit dialing as of October 7, 2025.

Is 313 still Detroit's area code?

Yes. Area code 313 remains active and is Detroit's historic code. However, 313 number capacity was exhausted and the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved the 679 overlay, which entered service November 7, 2025.

Existing 313 customers keep their numbers indefinitely. New activations in Detroit now receive 679. Both codes serve identical geography — Wayne County's Detroit core and inner suburbs.

What area codes cover the Detroit metro area?

The Detroit metro area uses five area codes.

313 and 679 cover Detroit city and inner Wayne County (Dearborn, Hamtramck, the Grosse Pointes, Downriver cities). 248 and its overlay 947 cover Oakland County suburbs — Troy, Southfield, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Auburn Hills. 586 covers all of Macomb County — Warren, Sterling Heights, Mount Clemens, St. Clair Shores. 734 covers outer Wayne County and Ann Arbor — Livonia, Westland, Wyandotte, Trenton.

When did Detroit get the 679 area code?

The Michigan Public Service Commission announced the 679 overlay on March 17, 2025. A permissive 10-digit dialing period ran from April 7 through October 7, 2025. Mandatory 10-digit dialing took effect October 7, 2025. Area code 679 began assigning new numbers on November 7, 2025.

The overlay was necessary because all prefixes in the 313 numbering plan were assigned. MPSC telecom director Ryan McAnany cited the proliferation of tablets, connected cars, and smartwatches as key demand drivers.

What does 313 mean in Detroit culture?

313 is Detroit's most recognized cultural symbol after the Motor City nickname itself. Eminem's 1996 debut album Infinite includes a track titled '313,' and the 2002 film 8 Mile features the code throughout — Eminem's character leads a group called 'three one third.' Detroit celebrates 313 Day each year on March 13.

The code also connects to Detroit's techno music roots (Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson all originated in 313 neighborhoods), the Motown era, and the four major sports teams — Tigers, Lions, Red Wings, and Pistons.

Are calls from Detroit area codes spam?

Not inherently. Legitimate businesses in Detroit use 313, 679, 248, 586, and 734 numbers. The issue is caller ID spoofing — scammers fake local Detroit numbers to increase answer rates.

Common Michigan phone scams include DTE Energy utility shutoff fraud, IRS impersonation calls, and fake water shutoff threats from DWSD impersonators. STIR/SHAKEN authentication assigns A-attestation to verified carriers. When you get a Detroit number through DialPhone, your outbound calls carry A-attestation — the highest trust level — so customers see a verified caller ID rather than 'Spam Likely.'

Can I get a Detroit 313 or 679 number for my business?

Yes. Virtual (VoIP) phone numbers are not tied to a physical office address. A business anywhere in the US can get a Detroit 313 or 679 number through a cloud phone provider and route calls to any device.

DialPhone assigns available Detroit numbers in minutes. No Detroit office required. Outbound calls display your Detroit number as caller ID, and STIR/SHAKEN A-attestation ensures your calls reach customers as verified, not flagged as spam.
